High-Level Partnership Mission to the Horn of Africa

WHAT: The high-level mission is to collectively assess the humanitarian situation and heighten support for the humanitarian response to the drought and food security crisis in Africa’s Horn.

WHO: Ahmed Al Meraikhi, Humanitarian Envoy of the UN Secretary-General; Rashid Khalikov, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Partnerships with Middle East and Central Asia; H.E. Ms. Sacko Josefa Leonel Correa, Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, African Union Commission; H.E. Ms. Minata Samate Cessouma, Commissioner for Political Affairs, African Union Commission; Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, South Africa and USA as well as the World Bank and the African Development Bank.

WHERE: Ethiopia and Somalia

WHEN: 8th to 13th June 2017

The joint mission led by representatives of the African Union Commission and the United Nations, is scheduled to begin today, 8th June 2017 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the high-level delegates are expected to meet with Government ministers and senior officials, African Union officials, UN agencies and NGO partners. The delegates will continue to the Somali region in Ethiopia on 9 June 2017to observe and assess first-hand the challenges and needs of the humanitarian situations in Ethiopia and Somalia.

The mission will proceed to Somalia on 11th June, 2017 where the high level delegates will engage with Government ministers and other senior officials, UN representatives and humanitarian partners including civil society organizations. On 12th June 2017, the mission will travel to Doloow, southern part of Somalia to meet local authorities and interact with affected people and humanitarians working in the camps. The mission will wind up in Kenya, where the delegates will meet Government representatives and key humanitarian partners

The 6 day mission is expected to help raise awareness of the deteriorating situation and threat of drought and famine to support resource mobilization to accelerate response to drought and prevent famines. This will provide a platform for interested parties to come together to coordinate and enhance their humanitarian support to the Horn of Africa (and by extension to the famine-threatened countries beyond the Horn).

.A press conference is also scheduled take place on Tuesday 13 June, 13:30 (local time) at Hotel Intercontinental in Nairobi.
